Argentina: new president issues emergency decree on labour issues

  • On 20 December 2023, the Argentine government introduced Decree 70/2023, aimed, among others, at reshaping the employment landscape. 
  • This reform was, however,halted. Trade unions obtained injunctions against the enforcement of the labour chapter and a partial ruling by a labour court has suspended the effects of the new law. 
  • The decision now lies with the national Supreme Court of Justice.

Credit Agricole signs a new global agreement with UNI Global Union

  • On 9 October 2023, Crédit Agricole Group S.A. and UNI Global Union signed a new four-year agreementthat confirms the Group's focus on the protection of workers' rights in the workplace, their trade union and human rights, as well as its ongoing commitment to developing a fruitful social dialogue.
  • It applies to all 75.000 employees in 46 countries.

Generative AI and Jobs: A Global Analysis of potential effects on job quantity and quality (ILO Working paper 96)

  • new report  published by the ILO in August 2023 presents a global analysis of tasks and occupations implications to generative Artificial Intelligence.
  • According to the study, technology is likely to automate some tasks within an occupation while leaving time for other duties, as opposed to fully automating occupations. 
  • This study disregards the widespread concern that such technology could lead to job displacement. Lost jobs and industries are only partially exposed to automation and will be augmented and not replaced by generative AI.

OECD Employment Outlook 2023: Artificial Intelligence and the Labour Market

  • On 11 July 2023, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released the Employment Outlook 2023, which shows the latest labour market developments in OECD countries. 
  • It focuses on wage developments and the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the labour market (an OECD first-ever study in this area). 
  • Assuming an imminent technological revolution that could radically change the workplace, the report states that there are no signs of slowing labour demand, in the short-term, but possible changes in job quality and tasks.

  • In January 2023, President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone signed into law the country's landmark Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment Act (GEWE)
  • The law is the most significant increase in women's political participation in the country's history and an excellent achievement for gender equality in Sierra Leone. 
  • Approval was possible because of the understanding that emancipated women would contribute economically to the family, the community, and the country.

Uruguay: The Senate voted on amendments to collective bargaining
