This latest edition of the Newsletter features a deep dive into several pivotal updates and reports directly on initiatives impacting corporate industrial relations practices and policies. The lead article in the International section spotlights two new publications covering artificial intelligence (AI). The first one details is the revised OECD AI Principles, adopted in May 2024. The revised Principles recognise that AI has the potential to have broad and diverse impacts within and across societies and economies, particularly concerning economic shifts, competition, labour market transitions, inequalities, as well as implications for privacy, data protection, and digital security. The article highlights the OECD’s recommendations for effective AI policies that could assist policymakers and AI stakeholders as they navigate the impact of this emerging technology. The second publication is from the International Organisation of Employers (IOE) and provides an extensive assessment of the impact of AI on work and employment. Notably the IOE policy review examines the opportunities AI represents for boosting productivity, expanding labour markets and promoting economic growth. It also calls attention to areas that require governmental action including privacy protection and copyright infringement.
Another publication spotlighted in this edition is the ILO's World Employment and Social Outlook for May 2024. The May edition of the Outlook shows modest improvements in unemployment rates. Despite this positive news, the report underscores an increase in informal employment, and persistence inequalities particularly for women in low-income countries, linked to family responsibilities and women’s disproportionate share of unpaid care work – coupled with major deficits in care policies and services.
This edition also covers the latest legislative changes, court decisions, and policy responses from around the world, each with its unique implications for employers. From the new data protection rules in South Korea to the introduction of a 40-hour working week in Chile, these updates are vital for maintaining compliance and fostering a productive, equitable workplace.
We strive to bring you the latest developments in the field. This edition, with its lead features on AI, will support your efforts to develop strategies and practices related to this transformative technology.
